Types of Accommodations

There are lots of different types of accommodations provided at 麻豆社. This page just has some common examples. If you have additional questions about accommodations not listed on this page, you can access the 麻豆社 Student Accommodation Guide or contact SAS.

Accessibility Accommodations

While accessibility is always a key consideration at 麻豆社, for some students, we need to make sure it happens consistently and sometimes in unique ways. That is where accessibility accommodations come in.

Accessibility accommodations are focused on providing specific types of accessibility related supports. This could be ensuring materials are in a specific format or that audio is always accessible. There are a wide variety of possibilities depending on student need.

What To Know

  • Even when approved for the same accommodation, not all accessibility accommodations are the same. For example, you need to work with SAS so we can be clear about what is needed.
  • Students might use different Assistive Technology (AT) which changes what is needed.

Examples

  • Accessible Audio Content
  • Accessible Educational Materials
  • Accessible Textbooks/Books and Long-Readings
  • Use of an FM System

Classroom Accommodations

The types of educational activities a student may engage in while studying at 麻豆社 vary broadly based on a student鈥檚 specific degree program. Students are encouraged to regularly communicate with their academic advisor to review their program requirements. Approved classroom accommodations are generally applicable to all courses, but implementation may vary based on the nature of each course.

What To Know

  • Class size and room configurations vary. Accommodation implementation may look different from one class to another based on the number of students, the physical location, or the instructor鈥檚 expectations.
  • If a student with approved accommodations has any questions or concerns about implementation, they should contact SAS as soon as possible.

Examples

  • Preferential Seating
  • Tech-Assisted Note-taking
  • Short Breaks

Dining Accommodations

While 麻豆社 Dining can meet many specific dining needs through its inclusive options available to all (i.e. clear labeling of top-9 allergens, dedicated allergy-friendly stations, etc.) there may be instances where a student needs additional support based on the severity or unique nature of their condition.

What To Know

  • SAS may refer students to the Dining Services Dietician to discuss strategies available within the main Dining program.
  • Because most students living in traditional residence halls have access to an unlimited meal plan, many dietary needs related to frequency and quantity of consumption can be addressed through Dining鈥檚 unlimited meal plan options.

Examples

  • Custom Meal Ordering
  • Additional Meals To-go

Exam Accommodations

Students will likely encounter various exam styles and formats throughout their time at 麻豆社. Some students will require accommodations for their exams. These are accommodations that specifically apply to situations where there is a timed assessment.

What To Know

  • Accommodations are not intended to modify exam scheduling or content. For example, a student may have more than one exam scheduled per day or be required to take an exam in a specific format.
  • Exam accommodations are implemented by the instructor.
  • Students are not guaranteed a spot at the Testing Center. Faculty may choose to implement exam accommodations in different ways.

Examples

  • Time and a Half
  • Distraction Reduced Environment
  • Use of Laptop, Computer, Tablet

Flexibility Accommodations

Unlike in K-12 settings where attendance and assignment policies are generally streamlined across classes by the administration, attendance and assignment policies at 麻豆社 are set by individual course instructors, so they vary widely across individual colleges, courses, and sections. Flexibility accommodations are intended to help students better understand what flexibility is available within a course.

What To Know

Each course will have limits to the amount of flexibility possible, even with accommodations, based on the specific learning objectives of the course.

Course instructors are not required to change their course policies because a student has approved flexibility accommodations.

Students who experience a significant or acute health concern during the semester should reach out to their course instructor(s) as soon as possible.

It may be appropriate for the student to reach out to SAS and/or their Dean of Students' office for additional support.

This will most likely be the case if the student expects to miss more than 1-2 days of class or anticipates struggling to keep up with coursework.

Housing Accommodations

All students with an on-campus housing requirement (see 麻豆社 Housing policies for more information) should complete a Housing application. 麻豆社 has a wide variety of on-campus housing options; different sized halls, on-campus apartments, single occupancy rooms, suites, etc. Students wishing to discuss housing accommodations should register with SAS as soon as possible once they have filed their Housing application.

What To Know

  • Accommodation approval cannot guarantee specific housing placements.
  • Some placements are limited in quantity (i.e. Singles, Suites, Apartments).
  • Housing works to take student preferences into account through wish lists and other processes outside of accommodations. Students are encouraged to work with Housing toward their ideal situation even while the accommodation request process is underway.
  • Students who are not assigned to their ideal placement type due to limited availability, which can happen even with approved accommodations, are encouraged to keep in contact with Housing as movement throughout the academic year may be possible.

Examples

  • First Floor or Elevator Access
  • Access to a Single

Parking & Transportation Accommodations

Parking on the 麻豆社 campus is limited. While 麻豆社 does have a few different options for residential students, not all students will have access to parking. When parking is available, it is often in West Edge. Parking accommodations provide students access to on-campus parking, but it does not approve an individual for a specific lot.

What To Know

  • SAS does not assign a specific lot to a student.
  • Students who can purchase parking (non-first year students) should still follow all parking processes for purchasing a permit.
  • Once the parking lottery is completed, availability for parking spaces is limited. Requests should be made prior to the parking lottery deadline.

Examples

  • Parking as a first year
